It’s a really common question - and the short answer is: yes, you usually can. Taking pain relief before your chiropractic visit is generally safe and won’t stop your chiropractor from doing a proper assessment.
Many people arrive in significant discomfort. If taking painkillers helps you move more comfortably, sit, stand, or lie down more easily during your appointment, that can actually make the session smoother.
That said, there are a few helpful things to keep in mind:
Painkillers, whether that’s paracetamol like Panadol or anti-inflammatories such as Nurofen, reduce pain signals. This might make certain movements feel easier than they otherwise would. A good chiropractor will still rely on your history, movement testing, and physical examination, not just your pain response, but it’s helpful to mention what you’ve taken and when.
If you’re very sore, skipping pain relief doesn’t earn extra points. Being relaxed and able to tolerate assessment and treatment comfortably is more important than arriving “untreated.”
Follow dosage instructions and your GP’s advice, particularly if you have medical conditions or take other medications.
